An eNote from Rodney

As we arrive at the church this morning we are preparing for the funeral services for Martha Brookshire. Thank you all for your calls and visits of support to Martha’s family and for your help with today’s service.

I will start this bit of news with a story I have told several of you and now you all will know it. One of our life long members, Jim Hutchison, had a memory as clear as a bell until his last days and he had clear memories of our present church being built.  He remembered the church women making the chicken pies to sell at Pack Square and help pay the mortgage during the hard economic times after the 1929 Stock Market crash. One day, half joking I asked Jim what the builders were thinking when they put in all the steps we have in our building.  He said to me, “Rodney, when this building was built, people didn’t live long enough for their knees to go bad.”  There has long been a desire at Trinity for us to have a safe way to negotiate our stairs. Last week our church trustees signed a contract to use some of the money left to us by Mr. J.D. Howell and construct an elevator.  Our contractor, Carolina Cornerstone Construction, will be applying for permits and as soon as we bring our bathroom contract to a close work on the elevator will begin. The elevator work should be done in 4 to 6 months.

Once work on the elevator begins our lift will be out of operation.  The Trustees and the Church Council have agreed that when work on the elevator begins it is best for us to worship in the fellowship hall.  This will allow everyone who is dependent on the lift to be in worship.  I think we will have nice and cozy worship downstairs.  The thing to keep in mind as we make these improvements is that we are taking care of our building and making it more welcoming.

Several folks have said to me that we are giving back to a building that has given so much to us.

These are exciting times and I look forward to seeing you on Sunday for worship.

Sincerely,

Rodney
