An eNote from Rodney

Dear Trinity Congregation,

The New Testament lectionary text for Sunday stays in the Sermon on the Mount. I referenced the selected passage several weeks ago concerning loving our enemies. However, this passage ends with the admonition from Jesus that we should be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.

There’s a lot in that passage and I will try and address it. I will use the help of Christian thinker and writer Dallas Willard. Willard maintains that Jesus would not have given us the instructions he did if he had thought we couldn’t do them. So, perfection? What could that mean? It may take me several Sundays to work through this with you. It certainly is an appropriate topic as we approach Lent. The scripture lesson is Matthew 5:46-48.

Family Day at Tube World On Feb. 26th the Youth are headed to Tube World in Maggie Valley for our annual snow-tubing day. We are encouraging families (of any age, though there are minimum height requirements) to come along, making it a church-wide family outing. Tube World runs two-hour sessions, we’ll aim for the 2:00 p.m. session. We’ll meet after church for lunch and plan to be back to the church around 4:30 p.m. Youth have dibs on the van so families are encouraged to convoy with us or meet us there a little before 2:00 p.m. See Andrew for more details. Advance tickets are available on their website, but aren’t usually necessary.

Red Wagon Sunday This Sunday, we’ll collect snacks for Asheville Middle School. They need individually wrapped or packaged snacks: fruit cups, chips, pretzels, popcorn, crackers, Cheez-Its, Goldfish, fruit roll ups, etc.

Ash Wednesday is March 1st. We will have supper from 5:30 until 6, Bible study will be from 6 till 7 and after Bible study there will be a simple Ash Wednesday service which will last about 20 minutes and held in the sanctuary. Everyone is invited to the Ash Wednesday service. Choir rehearsal will begin after the service. I am thankful to Lee and the choir for making room for this service in their schedule. See you on Sunday morning.

Sincerely,

Rodney
