Hoyle Callahan Grose, 87, passed away Thursday afternoon, January 11, 2017, at his home, surrounded by family.

Hoyle was born in Spindale, NC, to the late Claude Virgil Grose and Nellie Ethelinda Callahan Grose. He graduated from Rutherfordton-Spindale Central High School. He also served three years in the National Guard in Spindale.
Hoyle is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret “Jody” Revels Grose; daughters, Marsha Joyner (Dan) of Wendell, NC; Janet Martindale (Lee) of Bradenton, FL; and Phyllis Allison Reece (Mike) of Asheville; two grandchildren, T.C. Martindale (Wendy) and Sarah Reece; a great-granddaughter, Charleston Martindale; and a brother, Phillip B. Grose. Preceding him in death were siblings C.V. Grose, Jr.; Margaret Anderson; and Mary Morrison.

He and his wife, Jody, are members of Trinity United Methodist Church in West Asheville. Hoyle had a great love for his church and church family. He served in many capacities, as a Sunday School teacher, UMF Parent, as part of the visitation committee, and past member of the church’s finance committee. Hoyle was a former owner of Allied Insulating Company in Asheville. He was also a past member of the Asheville Kiwanis Club, National Association of Home Builders, and the North Carolina Home Builders Association.

Hoyle was also a well-known professional Western Square Dance caller and instructor, beginning in 1971. He was a member of the North Carolina Caller’s Association, South Carolina Caller’s Association and The National Caller’s Association. He was inducted into The Western Carolina Federation of Round and Square-Dancing Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2017, the North Carolina Caller’s Association presented him with a Certificate of Lifetime Membership.

The Rev. Nancy Dixon Walton will conduct the memorial service at Trinity United Methodist Church, Saturday, January 20th at 2:00 p.m.. There will be a reception following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
