Children and Youth

Summer 2019

The Children and Youth Departments at Trinity United Methodist Church have some exciting things planned for the coming weeks and months.  Please take the time to read these offerings and compare with your calendar to see how your family can be a part of the fun this summer.  Space is limited for most of these opportunities, so act fast.

Tekoa Picnic

On Sunday, May 19, Trinity will be spending the afternoon together in fellowship at Camp Tekoa in Hendersonville.  We have the camp reserved from 2:00 to 6:00.  There will be swimming, diving, canoeing, paddle-boating, zip-lining, hiking, and time to sit on the rocking chairs and be in fellowship with each other.  The church will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks.  We’re asking the congregation to provide sides and desserts.  So bring your family, friends, neighbors, and food!

Camp Connect

Each summer Trinity UMC holds a week-long camp for older elementary children to help teach the importance of serving our community.  We are continuing that this year with Camp Connect.  During the weeks of July 8-12 and August 5-9, children going into grades 2-6 will go out and work with various service organizations in the Asheville area, like Hearts with Hands, The Lord’s Acre, Children First CIS, and Eblen Charities.  On Friday we’ll go to the Waynesville Rec Center indoor water park and the awesome playground near the rec center.  Cost for the week is $25.  Kids can sign up for both weeks, but first-time campers will get preference in the second week, to allow space for everyone to have a chance to participate.  Contact Andrew to register or for more information.

Camp Connect Mini

For the younger kids we will have a smaller version of Camp Connect the week of June 24-28.  This is for children age 4 through Third Grade.  They will spend each day playing games, eating snacks, hearing stories, making crafts, and helping with service projects.  The cost is $5.  Contact Andrew to register or for more information.

Aquarium

On June 20th, our children are invited to spend the night in the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.  The cost is $100 plus spending money and is open to all kids ages 7 and up (though it’s not really for older youth).  We will leave in the afternoon on the 20th and get dinner along the way.  We will get an after-hours tour of the aquarium and then spend the night.  The next day we’ll stay to explore during regular hours and return late afternoon on the 21st (getting lunch on the road home).

Summer Youth Trip

This summer the main Youth trip will be July 21-26.  We are following our recent pattern of staying at a United Methodist College while we work and play in the surrounding communities.  The trip is $150/Youth and is open to everyone going into 6th-12th Grade.

We are also looking into a second trip for some our younger youth for a few nights between June 28 and July 6.  If you’re interested in having your 6th-9th grader be a part of that trip, please let Andrew know which days your Youth is available during those days.

Camp Tekoa

Many kids from Trinity over the years have gone to Camp Tekoa.  They offer overnight and day camps throughout the summer.  The issue with day camp is driving back and forth to Hendersonville every day.  To help with that, the Trinity UMC van will take day campers to and from camp during the week of July 29 through August 2.  This is a free service (though we’d never turn down gas money), but we are only offering to drive.  You’ll have to register your child for camp that week by visiting camptekoa.org.  Let Andrew know if you’d like for your child(ren) to ride on the Trinity van that week.  We are limited to the number of seat belts in the van and because these weeks can fill up fast (registration is already open at their website).

Google Drive

There is a Children and Youth Google Drive page that has a calendar and tabs for various volunteer opportunities (UMYF chaperone, snack supper, Camp Connect Volunteers, etc.).  Visit TrinityWAVL.org/Youth and click on the link near the bottom of the page that says, TUMC Children/Youth Google Drive.

Please contact Andrew with any questions, concerns, or to sign up for any of these opportunities.
