An eNote from Rodney
First, Cheryl and I thank you for your calls of concern and offers of help. We hope to find out today what the extent of the fracture is and what kind of treatment she will receive. Hopefully a simple cast and some down time.
You received an email from us this week about a request from The Haywood Street Mission. They operate a clothes closet at the Haywood Street location and they need some volunteer help folding and putting out the clothes. They need this help on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you think you are available to help you can be in touch with our office and we will give you contact information. This would be a lovely way for you to be involved in a ministry to those Jesus called the least of these. Or as a church out west calls them, the precious.
This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost celebrates the descending of the Holy Spirit on the disciples 40 days after Jesus’ ascension into heaven. This gift causes the disciples to go into the streets of Jerusalem and start to preach the first Christian sermons. The scripture for Pentecost is found in Acts 2:121. Pentecost is often called the birthday of the church and at the end of our service on Sunday the youth will have a bit of church birthday cake for us. It will be a nice time to have a little fellowship together.
Some parts of the body of Christ identify themselves very closely to this day of Pentecost, calling themselves “pentecostal” as a way of defining their unique brand of Christian faith. On Sunday we will look at this word “pentecost”, how it is understood in Christian culture and how it might be misunderstood. There may be more pentecostal christians around than the pentecostals think.
This is the Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to all who have served our country and placed yourself in harm’s way. One of the ways Memorial Day is celebrated is with “Fleet Week” in New York City. The Navy parks a number of major ships in New York’s harbor and you are allowed to visit them. There are also lots of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen in town. Cheryl and I were in NYC during a Fleet Week the spring before we moved to Trinity and it’s very special.
If you are travelling this weekend be careful and have a good time. For everyone else I look forward to celebrating the birthday of the church with you on Sunday.
